The Exhibit
Nine rooms, in the order history happened. Each one is a Hutto 150 banner brought to life, with every photograph you can zoom into.
Room 1 · PrehistoryOur LandBefore there was a town, there was the land. Rolling Blackland Prairie, deep black soil, and creeks that shaped everything that followed.
Room 2 · 500 - 1800 ADThe First PeoplesHutto rests on land first shaped by the Native American tribes who roamed the Coastal Plains of Central Texas.
Room 3 · 1843 - 1876First SettlersBefore there was Hutto, there was Shiloh, a string of farms and ranches along Brushy Creek.
Room 4 · 1847 - 1880Our Early Black SettlersNot everyone who came to Brushy Creek came by choice. This is the story of enslavement, emancipation, and the families who built new lives here.
Room 5 · 1876The RailroadIn 1876 the International and Great Northern Railroad put a station on the prairie. A town grew around it, and it took a rancher's name.
Room 6 · 1877 - 1886The SouthsideThe first town grew on the south side of the tracks, until a June storm in 1886 nearly erased it.
Room 7 · 1887 - 1911The NorthsideAfter the storm, Hutto rebuilt north of the tracks. Fire, water, and electricity shaped the town that incorporated in 1911.
Room 8 · 1900 - TodayOur Mexican HeritageMexican influence is all around our city, in agriculture, architecture, food, language, and laws.
Room 9 · Circa 1915Hutto HipposEvery town has a story it loves to tell. Ours has a hippopotamus.
